Benefits obtained from good internal communications

Many senior executives are ambivalent about the need for any internal communications planning.  In another paper we have illustrated the barriers to internal communications and these should be aired when reviewing your internal communications process.  On the plus side, here are some of the tangible benefits you could outline.

Where people are kept in the dark and have no idea about the plans of their organisation, there is no incentive to give more than that requested of them.

But where people understand the plans of their organisation and where they hear what is happening to their organisation then they become part of the process.  Their jobs become relevant as part of the larger picture and through their involvement they feel an attachment and responsibility.  Research has shown that this then leads to:

  • Improved productivity
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Higher quality work and hence better products and services
  • Increased levels of innovation
  • Fewer strikes and therefore
    • Reduced costs.

Why?

  • Because people can articulate their needs
  • Have access to information which reduces uncertainty
  • Be involved or at least influencing decision making
  • And therefore satisfy their need to make a difference.
